Sometimes the roles written for children turn out to be... not so childlike. In the musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber", such a role is Tobias (Toby). An orphan taken in by Mrs. Lovett, he works in the bakery that sells meat pies made of human flesh. Having never known motherly warmth, Toby sees Mrs. Lovett as a mother figure. So when he witnesses her murder, the traumatized child takes revenge on Sweeney Todd. Toby is perhaps the most sensitive and tragic character in the musical. Rafailas Karpis infused him not only with playfulness, a sense of humor, and deep sorrow, but also with his own immense heart. He also brought to the role a refined command of English, honed through his love for the music of "The Beatles". A tenor beloved by audiences and highly valued by creators, Karpis stands out for his ability to reveal a part of himself in every character he plays.
